Best Ball

Team format

Best Ball (also known as Four-Ball in match play) is a team format where every player plays their own ball throughout the round. On each hole, only the best (lowest) score from each team counts toward the team total. This format is perfect for mixing skill levels since a strong player can carry a teammate on tough holes, while the weaker player can surprise on others. It reduces pressure on individuals while keeping competition between teams intense.

Pro Tip

Ideal for couples golf or corporate outings. Lower pressure since your partner can save the hole.

Rules & Scoring

Team Formation

Teams are typically formed with 2 players each, though larger teams are supported. Pairings are often made to balance skill levels — a low handicapper paired with a higher handicapper.

Scoring Each Hole

Every player in the group plays their own ball from tee to green. After the hole is complete, the lowest score among teammates becomes the team score for that hole.

Handicap Application

Each player receives their own handicap strokes (optional, enable if your group wants handicaps). This means a 20-handicapper gets their strokes on the hardest-rated holes, leveling the playing field within teams.

Winning the Match

The team with the lowest combined total at the end of the round wins. Best Ball can be played as stroke play or match play depending on the group's preference.
